About Sulbacin Injection

Sulbacin Injection is an antibiotic so it is used to fight bacterial infections. It is a semi-synthetic derivative of penicillin and is used to treat urinary tract infections, pneumonia, respiratory track infections, meningitis, or gonorrhea, infections of the stomach or intestines.

This medicine is also used for the Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections (nonbeta-lactamase-producing organisms); susceptible bacterial infections caused by streptococci, pneumococci, nonpenicillinase-producing staphylococci, Listeria, meningococci.

Inform your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant during the course of this medicine. It is advised to avoid Sulbacin Injection if –

  • you have been allergic towards any penicillin antibiotic.
  • you are taking tetracycline antibiotics or mononucleotic medicines.
  • you have recently received or will be receiving any immunisation of vaccination.

Sulbacin Injection is less toxic than other antibiotics. Side effects are rare and hardly occur. They include nausea, vomiting, high level of eosinophils, skin rashes, swelling of tongue and diarrhoea. Serious but rare side effects include dark urine, abdominal pain, jaundice, easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever.

The dosage of this medicine as prescribed by your doctor depends on your age, your kidney function, and the type of bacteria causing the infection. It is taken usually 4 times a day in every 6 hours, or as directed by a doctor. Unnecessary use or overuse of this medicine will decrease its effectiveness.

Take entire prescription, even if you are feeling better. Take at equal intervals around-the-clock; preferably on an empty stomach with a full glass of water (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals).

Maintain adequate hydration (2-3 L/day of fluids unless instructed to restrict fluid intake). You may experience nausea or vomiting (small frequent meals, frequent mouth care, sucking lozenges, or chewing gum may help).

If diabetic, drug may cause false tests with Clinitest® urine glucose monitoring; use of glucose oxidase methods (Clinistix®) or serum glucose monitoring is preferable.

Symptoms of penicillin overdose include neuromuscular hypersensitivity (agitation, hallucinations, asterixis, encephalopathy, confusion, and seizures) and electrolyte imbalance with potassium or sodium salts, especially in renal failure.

Hemodialysis may be helpful to aid in the removal of the drug from the blood, otherwise most treatment is supportive or symptom directed. This drug may interfere with oral contraceptives; an alternate form of birth control should be used.

        Sulbacin Injection should be discontinued if severe diarrhea occurs. Patients having a history of Colitis should be monitored closely.
