Tacalcitol

Prescription vs OTC : Prescription by Doctor required

About Tacalcitol

Tacalcitol is a vitamin compound used in the treatment of plaque psoriasis, which is one of the most common types of psoriasis. When a person is affected by psoriasis, they develop scaly red patches on their skin, mostly in and around their knees, elbows, scalp and lower back. As psoriasis is caused due to over-multiplication of cells, Tacalcitol works in treating this condition by slowing down the production of skin cells, which in turn reduces the scaly, inflamed patches of skin.

Tacalcitol is generally administered as topical ointment or lotion, which is supposed to be applied to the affected area once a day, generally before going to bed.

Tacalcitol is not supposed to be used in quantities of more than 10 g per day. As Tacalcitol is directly absorbed the skin, using it in quantities greater than prescribed can have harmful effects. Tacalcitol should also be applied in a very thin layer, as this helps the skin absorb it quickly.

As with any other medicine, Tacalcitol can have a certain number of side effects, the most common of which include redness of skin, itching, tingling, discomfort and irritation.
