Thiopental Sodium
About Thiopental Sodium
Thiopental Sodium is a depressant which is used for a wide range of purposes, from sedation to anaesthesia. It is also used to relieve pain. While primarily used as an anaesthetic for brief surgical procedures, it is also used to supplement other anaesthetics, to sedate during hypnosis, to relax the muscles in convulsive states, and also for narcosynthesis and narcoanalysis in patients with psychiatric disorders. The most common mode of administration is intravenously, though the oral and rectal modes of administration are also known. Thiopental Sodium makes a person unconscious within 30-45 seconds.
The usual dosage is 3-6 mg/kg, but it may vary with age, sex, lean body mass, and certain medical conditions like burns, hypovolemia, liver failure, etc. Younger people tend to require relatively larger doses than middle-aged or elderly people, as the latter take more time to metabolize. Contraindications include absence of suitable veins for IV, porphyria, and allergy to barbiturates, Side effects of Thiopental Sodium include headaches, prolonged sleepiness, nausea and agitated emergence. The hangover from the side effects can last for up to 36 hours.
Do not take Thiopental Sodium unless prescribed, as it can form a habit very easily. It may also prove to be fatal in higher doses.
