About Thioridazine
Thioridazine is a phenothiazine that is used to treat people with schizophrenia who cannot take other medicines or who show no improvement.
It is not to be used if you are allergic to Thioridazine or any other phenothiazines. It is not to be taken if you have an irregular heartbeat, if you have taken narcotic medicines like codeine, or if you have consumed large amounts of alcohol. Medicines like astemizole, cabergoline, cisapride, dofetilide, metoclopramide, pergolide can create complications when taken with Thioridazine.
Thioridazine is to be taken with or without food. In case taking it empty stomach causes some stomach irritation, take it with food. Never take a double dose of Thioridazine, it is better that you skip it till the next time you take it. It is important that you take it regularly.
The most common side effects of Thioridazine are enlarged pupils, jitteriness, drowsiness, dry mouth and stuffy nose. Some of the more severe side effects are tremor, twitching, blurred vison, confusion and decreased coordination.

How does this medication work?
This medication acts by blocking postsynaptic mesolimbic dopaminergic D1 and D2 receptors in the brain. It blocks the effect of alpha-adrenergic, reduces the discharge of hypophyseal and hypothalamic hormones. This medicine also reduces reticular activity system, thereby affecting body temperature and basal metabolism.
