About Trimebutine

Trimebutine is a spasmolytic agent that regulates intestinal and colonic motility and relieves abdominal pain with antimuscarinic and weak mu opioid agonist effects. It is marketed for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and lower gastrointestinal tract motility disorders, with IBS being one of the most common multifactorial GI disorders. It is used to restore normal bowel function and is commonly present in pharmaceutical mixtures as trimebutine maleate salt form. Trimebutine is not a FDA-approved drug, but it is available in Canada and several other international countries.

USES: This medication helps regulate movement of the intestinal tract. It is used to treat symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (spastic colon). It may also be used after intestinal surgery.SIDE EFFECTS:Dry mouth, foul taste, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue or headache may occur. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. To avoid dizziness when rising from a seated or lying position, get up slowly. Also limit your intake of alcoholic beverages which will aggravate these effects.

DOSE:The adult recommended dose is up to 600 mg daily in divided doses. It may be administered as two 100 mg tablets three times daily before meals or one 200 mg tablet three times daily before mealsTRIMEBUTINE (trimebutine maleate) in pregnant women is not recommended.TRIMEBUTINE (trimebutine maleate) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to trimebutine maleate or any of the excipients. No other contraindications have been identified at this time.

It binds with high affinity to smooth muscle calcium channels to inhibit calcium influx and decrease colon peristalsis. This also inhibits outward potassium efflux, causing increased colon peristalsis.
