About Verapamil
Verapamil, a class-IV antiarrhythmic is used for treating patients with high blood pressure, supraventricular tachycardia, chest pain due insufficient blood flow to the heart. It may also be used for cluster headaches or migraines. It works by relaxation of blood vessels for easy blood flow.
Verapamil medication is given as oral administration or is injected into a vein. It is available in various strengths such as 180 mg/24 hours, 120 mg/24 hours, 240 mg/24 hours, 360 mg/24 hours, 2.5 mg/ml, 40 mg, 80 mg, 120 mg, 240 mg/12 hours, 120 mg/12 hours, 180 mg/12 hours, 100 mg/24 hours, 200 mg/24 hours, 300 mg/24 hours. The dose is usually advised to be taken during bedtime.
The drug should be taken as per doctor’s advice. It should be avoided if the person is allergic to any of its ingredients. It may cause dizziness and hence driving vehicles or heavy machinery that requires extreme alertness should be done safely.
The most common side effects of Verapamil are constipation, headache, low blood pressure, nausea, dizziness, congestive heart failure, elevated liver enzymes, low heart rate, edema, pulmonary edema, fatigue, rash, flushing, shortness of breath, atrio-ventricular block.
