About Vincristine

Vincristine is a cancer medication that interrupts the growth of cancer cells and slows their spread in the patient’s body. Vincristine is used in the treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma which are soft tissue tumors, neuroblastoma which is cancer that forms in nerve tissue, leukemia, Hodgkin's disease and Wilms' tumor. Vincristine is sometimes used in a combination with other cancer medications. You should tell your doctor about all the medication you are on and the allergies you have. Do not use this medication if you suffer from nerve-muscle disorder, for example Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome, muscular dystrophy, ALS, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis.

Before taking Vincristine be sure to ask your doctor to run tests to ensure Vincristine is safe for you, problems such as liver disease, breathing problems, epilepsy, a bacterial infection, a blockage in your intestines, or coronary artery disease can prevent Vincristine from doing its job or stop it completely or have undesired affects that can harm you. Side effects such as bronchospasm which include wheezing, tightness of the chest, trouble in breathing, burning, numbness, pain, or a tingly feeling, decreased weight with loss of muscle tissue are expected.

    How does this medication work?

    It is an antitumor drug, and it acts by blocking cell division via its interaction with tubulin at metaphase. Also, it interferes with another body mechanism too, that includes nucleic and lipid biosynthesis, cellular respiration, cAMP, Amino acid and glutathione metabolism, lastly influence the calmodulin-dependent Ca2+-transport ATPase activity.
