About Kelfer 500mg Capsule

Kelfer 500mg Capsule is mainly used for patients suffering from thalassaemia. It helps to bring control the excessive iron in the patient’s body because of repeated blood transfusions and also helps to chelate iron. Extremely high levels of iron in the body can cause several health issues such as diabetes, liver and kidney problems and stunted growth in children.

The serum ferritin levels should be monitored regularly during the treatment. This drug works as a chelator of iron. It attaches to ferric ions (iron III) in the body in a 3:1 (deferiprone: iron) molar ration thereby forming a stable complex that can be eliminated from the body through urine.

It is usually taken in the form of a tablet, 3 times a day, in the morning, afternoon and evening. Although it can be taken without food, it is generally suggested to take it with a meal to prevent nausea that may occur. Some common side effects of this medication include nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. It may also cause your urine to become reddish-brown.
