It is essential to determine whether the breast reconstruction surgery is suitable for you and which type would be required to treat your condition. Your doctor will consider some essential factors which would decide the extent of effectiveness of the operation, and they include the size and location of cancer, amount of available tissues, how quickly you wish to recover, aesthetic issues and of course, your overall health. If you have recently undergone breast cancer surgery, you may consider breast reconstruction surgery as well.
Who may not require a breast reconstruction surgery?

Most women who have undergone breast conservation surgery either as partial mastectomy or lumpectomy may not require a breast reconstruction. But it is often seen that a rare percentage of these women experience breast deformity owing to cancer surgery. For instance, there may be a large tumor in small breasts distorting their shape. If you are undergoing such difficulties, it is suggested that you should consider undergoing breast reconstruction surgery with smaller implants or grafting with fat.

There are different types of breast reconstruction surgery, and at times, this process could mean going through more than one operation. Two major variants of surgeries are available to reconstruct the shape of breasts. They are - breast implants where silicone or saline implants are inserted into the breast; and tissue flap procedure in which the patient's tissues are used for the process. You should consult with your doctor to know which process would be suitable for you and sometimes, you may have to undergo a combination of both these processes.
The most common risk of breast reconstruction surgery is capsular contracture.

Women who undergo breast implants tend to suffer from capsular contracture where a scar tissue starts forming near the soft implant. When it tightens, it leads to squeezing of the implant making the breast feel hard. If you are experiencing this issue, you should consider removing the scar or capsule without any delay.

It is crucial to have a clear idea about what to expect after the breast reconstruction surgery for rebuilding the breast. These may include risks as well as side effects. You are likely to feel better within three to four weeks, and you can return to your day to day activities. But you should be prepared to face common issues such as bleeding, fluid buildup, blood clots, infection, and extreme tiredness. It is also important to have a realistic expectation about the process. If you find that the condition is deteriorating after the surgery, you should let your surgeon know at the earliest.
