Age is a risk factor for developing hematuria

Many men older than 50 have occasional hematuria due to an enlarged prostate gland. Younger men are also more likely to have something called Alport syndrome, a form of hereditary kidney disease that can cause blood in the urine. Older men should be very careful about their prostate gland health. They should schedule yearly check-ups to make sure that their prostate gland is healthy.

Hematuria or blood in urine can occur due to many reasons. Commonly, this condition can signal a UTI, kidney stones, kidney infections and injuries. An enlarged prostrate in men can also cause blood cells to leak into urine. Another reason for visible urinary bleeding can be advanced kidney, bladder or prostate cancer. Unfortunately, in early stages of these types of cancer the signs are usually missed and the disease reaches a mature stage before its picked up. Do not wait to visit a doctor if you get blood in your urine. This can be a symptom of a dangerous disease like cancer.
Strenuous exercise can cause blood in urine

Sometimes strenuous exercise especially jogging can cause blood in urine. Possible reasons could be trauma to the bladder, dehydration or the breakdown of red blood cells that can occur with sustained aerobic exercise. It s called Runner s hematuria. Runners who are more prone to blood in urine should avoid long-distance running. Take breaks and rest in between for avoiding this problem.

Medications can cause blood in urine

The anti-cancer drugs cyclophosphamide and penicillin both can cause urinary bleeding. Visible blood in urine can also occur if you take an anticoagulant, such as aspirin and the blood thinner heparin for heart problems.
