Can women go on a diet to lose weight post pregnancy.

As long as the mother is able to take a nutritionally well-balanced diet, a few deficit in calories will not affect the quality of the breast milk. This is a problem usually encountered by body conscious women as many resort to heavy physical exercise to shed off the extra kilos which is not advisable. Make a daily diet chart that includes all nutritional elements and follow it for the first forty days post delivery. This will ensure safety for the mother and good quality of breast milk for the baby.

While all the food products mentioned above are preferred for women who have just undergone delivery, low- fat dairy products are recommended. Women who are vegetarian may supplement legumes instead of non-veg food to gain adequate proteins. Other than the foods mentioned above, citrus fruits are a great source of vitamin C and must be taken in the diet. Taking supplements that would ensure the breastfeed is nutritionally rich. It is advisable for women who can not manage the intake a balanced diet daily.

While all the food that the mother consumes will affect the quality and taste of the breastfeed. Chocolates and fruits are seen to inadvertently cause the taste of the feed to become such that it is not liked by the baby. Nonetheless, most babies won t be affected by it. Spices, however, are seen to alter the feeds taste to an extent that most of the babies will reject taking the feed. Plain food without much spices, specially low-fat dairy food makes the breast-feed lot more acceptable for the baby.
Consuming meats and eggs is necessary to produce a good quality breast feed.

While it is true that non-vegetarian food has adequate iron and proteins that a mother needs to produce a good quality feed, this nutrition may also be obtained from other sources such as spinach, legumes or green leafy vegetables. Iron supplements go a long way in helping women to be able to consume the recommended daily allowance of iron for their body. Keeping track and writing down what one consumes during this period would be ideal. Reviewing this once every week would be good to know if the baby is getting enough nutrition from varied sources and the baby would only get what the mother passes on to the baby from her feed.

While it is true that a little bit of caffeine won t affect the quality of feed the baby consumes, an intake that includes a substantial amount of caffeine will trouble the baby. It may cause disruption in the sleep cycle of the baby and also result in the baby becoming quite fussy and cranky. Avoiding alcohol would probably be a nice idea as it may result in alcohol reaching your baby through the breast milk. Taking help from the pediatric doctor regarding good food choices and to know what is contraindicated, is the right way to go.
