What is Corneal Blindness?

Corneal blindness is a condition in which a person loses his/her vision due to any corneal disease. Corneal blindness is different from glaucoma, cataract, and Age-Related Macular Degeneration as it generally affects youth. It especially affects those who live in rural areas and have a lower socio-economic background. These people have insufficient healthcare facilities and are prone to infections and trauma followed by poor access to proper eye care.
What are the main causes of corneal blindness?

There are many causes of corneal blindness. However, one of the main three causes of corneal blindness are:
Corneal Infection: Any fungal, bacterial, and viral infection in cornea increases the chance of corneal disease which further leads to corneal blindness. Trachoma is a type of eye infection and a leading caused of vision loss and blindness.
Eye Trauma: It is the second main cause of blindness. Any eye trauma or eye ulceration can lead to corneal blindness.
Malnutrition: Deficiency of Vitamin A can also lead to loss of vision. It is one of the most common reasons for childhood blindness.
Corneal blindness is the fourth most common cause of blindness.

Corneal blindness is the 4th most common cause of blindness all over the world.
The data can be proved by the report of the World Health Organization. It estimated that corneal blindness is the 4th most common cause of blindness globally (5.1%). It is also one of the common causes of visual deficiency after glaucoma, cataract, and age-related macular degeneration.
The only curative treatment of corneal blindness is transplanting or grafting.

The only definite curative ways to treat corneal blindness is a corneal graft or corneal transplantation. However, both procedures are quite difficult to perform as the viable eye tissue is not available in most of the banks of even developing countries. In corneal transplantation or corneal graft surgery, the part or the entire cornea is transplanted by a donor's eye.
