What is night blindness?

Night blindness is a condition of the eye which makes the affected individual experience poor vision, particularly at the night time. The problem of poor vision does not occur during the day time. Most importantly, night blindness is not a disease but a specific condition where the vision is reduced when the light is dim or at night time. Why does night blindness occur?

Night blindness occurs because the rods and the cones in the eyes are not functioning properly. The rods and the cones are the photoreceptor cells that take in light and pass the information to the brain for interpretation through the optic nerve. The rods which are responsible for vision, when do not function effectively in dim light results in night blindness. Night blindness may be caused due to near-sightedness and cataract as well. In either of the case, treatment is possible.
