The signs of a toothache are very easy to detect. The first sign is a shooting pain, constant and throbbing around the area of the affected tooth. The pain occurs because inflammation takes place in the gum. That is why we can detect a swelling cheek which is the swelled gum. Since the nerves are connected, the tooth pain leads to a severe headache. If the tooth has caught an infection, it produces a foul-tasting drainage. In some cases, pain is felt only when pressure is applied to the tooth. At times pain becomes unbearable, and doctors prescribe painkillers to reduce pain and inflammation.

When the tooth pain is persistent, the dentist would first obtain the medical history of the patient. The next step is an inquiry of the pain- when it started, the duration of the persistence, what gives relief and what makes the pain severe. The doctor would recommend an X-ray to be done to know the exact cause of the pain. Based on the diagnosis, further treatment will be carried out. Never neglect infections related to the tooth as they can be severe enough to spread to the bloodstream.
