Oily skin refers to skin that produces an excessive amount of sebum. This could be caused by hormonal imbalances, medication, stress, genetics, hormonal changes and certain types of cosmetics. Oily skin can be identified by large, visible pores, thick skin, paleness and an oily shine. Oily skin is also highly prone to acne, pimples and blackheads. In severe cases of oily skin, pus-filled papules may also appear on the skin. Washing your face regularly can help control the oil secretions.

The T zone refers to the forehead and nose. People with combination skin typically have an oily T zone and dry cheeks. This T zone can vary from a slim area to a wide zone. Combination skin is characterized by enlarged pores on the T zone and dry to normal skin on the cheeks. In such cases, the skin around the T zone produces excess sebum and the skin on the cheeks produces less sebum. Combination skin should be exfoliated daily and moisturized with a light moisturizer.

It is a misconception that oily skin does not need a moisturizer. With the right moisturizer, your skin will look bright and feel soft and nourished. A non-comedogenic moisturizer is ideal for oily skin. Oily skin is also prone to pimples that can get infected easily. Hence, look for fragrance-free moisturizers. Avoid alcohol-based moisturizers.

Paying attention to how you bathe can help dry skin stay supple and soft. Avoid long baths with hot water. Instead, bathe with warm water and try to have a quick shower. Use minimal amounts of a fragrance-free cleanser and ensure that no soap remains on the skin after your shower. Do not rub the towel on your skin, but use it as a blotter. This keeps your skin from turning rough. The best time to moisturize dry skin is immediately after a shower.
