What is Minimal Access Surgery in Laparoscopic Surgery?
1 of 5
A laparoscopic surgeon conducts a Minimal Access Surgery with just one or a few small incisions. He does not need to do a large incision. He passes the camera through the incision, views the entire area through it and conducts surgery while looking at a TV monitor. While the laparoscope is inserted through one incision, surgical instruments are inserted through other incisions. The surgeon gets a magnified view of the places to operate on. If such a procedure is carried out to operate part of the abdomen, it is known as Laparoscopic Surgery.
Is Minimal Access Surgery possible in all abdominal surgical procedures?
2 of 5
Minimal Access Surgery is possible in all kinds of abdominal surgical procedures, including gynecological ones. However, it depends on the surgeon to decide whether an open surgery or a Minimally Invasive Surgery would be more useful in a particular case. In general surgeries like removal of gallbladder stone, removal of ovarian cyst, removal of uterus, blocking blood supply to fibroids in a uterus during or before pregnancy, etc. are ideal conditions for such surgery.
What is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure?
3 of 5
Whether it is upper GI Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, or Diagnostic Laparoscopy, it is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure. In upper GI Endoscopy, an endoscope containing a camera is inserted into the GI canal through the mouth. The image is seen on the monitor and the diagnosis is made on the basis of that. In a Colonoscopy, a scope containing a camera is inserted through the anus to explore the colorectal area for signs of disease. Diagnostic Laparoscopy is similar to these. Here a Laparoscope is inserted through the incision into the abdominal cavity. The camera explores the cavity for signs of disease. However, a Diagnostic Laparoscopy can turn into minimally invasive surgery.
Laparoscopic Minimal Access Surgery is carried out without general anesthesia?
4 of 5
Minimal Access Laparoscopic Surgery is essentially performed under general anesthesia, which means that the patient remains unconscious during the procedure. However, due to the minimal invasive nature of the surgery, the patient can go home on the day of the surgery itself. These types of surgeries require short hospital stays and even recovery time is less. These surgeries rarely show any complications after surgery.
Which is the most modern form of Minimal Access Laparoscopic Surgery?
5 of 5
Robotic surgery is the most modern form of laparoscopy. It is also known as robot-assisted surgery, since it allows surgeons to perform different complex procedures precisely with the help of robots. These robots have mechanical arms which are equipped with different instruments. This leads to performing more complex surgeries, with minimal incisions, and quicker recovery time.
