What are some surgeries which are almost always done laparoscopically now?
1 of 5
Conventional surgery required the abdomen to be cut open to remove gallstones or appendix, which is no longer the case. Similarly, hernia repairs are almost always done laparoscopically now. Unless the person s medical condition forbids, most abdominal procedures are almost always done laparoscopically. Laparoscopic surgery sounds very promising and useful in many patients, both from cosmetic and surgical points of view.
Laparoscopic surgery can also be done for diagnosis.
2 of 5
Not just for surgical correction, in many people, laparoscopy is done to diagnose conditions relating to internal organs. This could be to confirm the presence of tumors, abscess, cysts, or even take biopsies. The exact location of kidney stones can be identified via laparoscopy, and if required, they can be removed also at the same time. Get realistic expectations by talking to your doctor if you will be subjected to the procedure only once or twice (diagnosis alone or diagnosis and treatment). Do not be alarmed later if you have to go through the procedure again.
What are some possible limitation or complications of laparoscopic surgery?
3 of 5
As much as laparoscopic surgery is beneficial, it also asks for a little more than traditional open surgery in terms of equipment, facilities, and surgical expertise. The surgeon should be trained in laparoscopic surgical techniques, failing which, there could be serious complications. For removal of an abscess or cyst, it could be incomplete; though rare, it is possible. Ensure you are in safe hands when going in for laparoscopic surgery and get all queries clarified.

While it is true that the laparoscopic method is replacing the traditional method for more and more complex surgeries, but there are still some instances where the traditional method is preferred. These include morbidly complex cases like multiple intra-abdominal injuries, previous failed laparoscopic attempts, perforation, peritonitis, surgical shock, etc. In these patients, open surgery would be preferred to get a more holistic option and plan treatment. Get thorough surgical advice from your doctor before going ahead with laparoscopic surgery.
What are the most common advantages of laparoscopic surgery?
5 of 5
While conventional surgery required cutting open the entire area (for instance, the abdomen) to perform surgery, laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive. A few small incisions are made to gain adequate visibility and access to the surgical site. The patient does not have to stay in the hospital for a prolonged period, and postop recovery is also faster and better with this. Most surgeries are now done laparoscopically; however, talk to your doctor about the pros and cons before deciding.
