Arthroscopy is a procedure for diagnosing and treating joint problems. In this procedure, a surgeon inserts a narrow tube attached to a fibre-optic video camera through a small incision not bigger than a size of a buttonhole. The visual of your joint's interior is displayed on a high-definition video monitor. Arthroscopy allows the surgeon to assess your joint's interior without making a large incision. Surgeons can even repair some type of joint damage during arthroscopy by inserting pencil like instruments via other incisions.

Many patients have this misconception that their whole knee joint will be replaced in a replacement surgery but in reality, only a minimal amount of bone is taken out before the new parts are inserted. In knee replacement surgery these parts consist of a metal cap for the femur, a metal base plate on the tibia and a piece of plastic in between as the cartilage.
