In addition to the above factors, noses have a tendency of bleeding on account of nasal infectivity, post nose surgery, and punctured nasal septum. Moreover, underlying medical conditions, excessive alcohol intake, blood clots, high blood pressure (hypertension), and intake of some medicines also lead to bleeding nose. The most common cause of nosebleeds is trauma, either external or internal. Avoid picking your nose when it is injured.

The use of a humidifier helps to prevent nosebleeds as it prevents the air from becoming dry. If a person is exposed to dehydrated air for extended durations, it can lead to a bleeding nose. Therefore, the air around the house should not be dry. Another way of preventing nosebleeds is the application of petroleum jelly within your nostrils for keeping the insides of the nose moist. If you suffer from nosebleeds very often, make sure that you always use a humidifier during dry weather and at high altitudes.

A few medications can contribute to nosebleeds in certain groups of people. In fact, particular drugs can cause the nosebleeds that last for an extended duration. It is common in people who take anticoagulants which are blood-thinning medicines. Also, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can lead to nosebleeds. Aspirin is a drug that causes nosebleeds in some people. Always consult the doctors about the use of drugs and the duration for which they should be taken.
Medical intervention should be sought only if the nosebleeds last for longer than 20 minutes.

In general, it is recommended to seek medical care only if the nose does not stop bleeding for over 20 minutes and even after applying the home treatments. A person requires medical attention when he experiences continuous bleeding from the nose or feeling dizzy or having recurring bouts of uncontrollable bleeding. Patients suffering from nosebleeds on a frequent basis are referred to Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) specialists. Do not delay to contact the medical experts if there is continuous bleeding.

Home-based cures that help in stopping the bleeding are advised as the first mode of treatment. One is advised to lean forward and tilt the head for preventing the blood to run down the throat. Also, pinching the softer parts of the nose tightly while sitting on a chair is advised; make sure that you breathe from the mouth in the meanwhile. Sitting in an upright position, so the head is placed above the heart also helps as this can lower blood pressure and control the bleeding. The use of an ice pack may not help because it is about reducing the pressure and not temperature when trying to control the nosebleeds.
