Spinal fusion surgery can treat spinal fracture.
1 of 5
Spinal fusion surgery is a surgical procedure where a bone graft is used to fix adjoining vertebral sections into one single bone which does not have joints in between and hence does not move. This procedure is performed to treat spinal pain caused due to excessive movement of or damage to a section of the spinal column. This procedure is not used to treat spinal fracture directly, but can relieve pain caused due to spinal fracture if movement of the fractured section of the spine causes pain.
Spinal fusion surgery is used to treat degenerative disc disease.
2 of 5
Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure where adjacent vertebrae are fused using a bone graft to prevent their movement and relieve pain. Degenerative disc is a spinal column where the cartilaginous intervertebral discs are damaged due to wear and tear, causing the vertebral bones to rub directly against each other when they move, causing pain. Spinal fusion fuses the affected vertebral bones together, thereby preventing them from rubbing against each other and causing pain. Thus it can be used to treat degenerative disc disorder.
From where can the bone graft for spinal fusion surgery be taken?
3 of 5
A bone graft is used in the spinal fusion surgery procedure to prevent movement of the vertebral bones. The material used as bone graft is usually taken from the hip of the patient themselves, where it is called Autograft bone. The bone can also be harvested from a dead cadaver, where it is called Allograft bone. The bone graft may also be performed using a synthetic material manufactured to resemble a bone, in which case it is called Synthetic Bone-Graft Substitute.
Which of the following conditions can require a spinal fusion surgery?
4 of 5
Degenerative disc is a condition where the spinal discs are damaged due to wear and tear causing the vertebral sections to rub against one another. Spinal stenosis is a condition where the spinal column narrows down and puts pressure on the spinal cord causing pain. Tumors in the spine put pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerves, which then causes pain and may lead to degeneration of the nerves. All of these conditions may be treated by the spinal fusion surgery procedure to prevent unwanted movement of the affected sections of the vertebral column and to reduce and prevent pain and other nervous conditions.
Spinal Fusion surgery stops vertebral sections from movement.
5 of 5
Spinal Fusion is a surgical procedure which uses a bone graft to fuse adjacent vertebral sections together to prevent them from moving if their excessive movement is the cause of pain and joint degeneration. Hence, the affected vertebral sections are stopped from moving while the rest of the spinal column remains mobile.
