Headaches are very common in both the genders and all age- groups. Sometimes, we experience headaches because of tiredness, hunger or adverse conditions. However, when pregnant ladies and new mothers get headaches then the reasons may not be all that trivial. Headaches may also portend strokes and /or high blood pressure. In fact, it is not just the seniors but the new mothers who, upon getting a headache, must consult their doctor immediately. If you are above 50, are an expectant or a new mother then getting a headache means visiting a doctor immediately.

There are other stroke-related symptoms like numbness in the body, dizziness, loss of balance or slurring of speech that should not be avoided when they are accompanied by a sudden headache. Another important symptom of a stroke is the weakness in the arms; the patient just cannot lift them up. When you see someone displaying these symptoms, rush him or her to the nearest hospital.
Most headaches are not serious

Indeed, most headaches are not a cause for concern. They may be related to hunger, tiredness or just change in weather. However, as stated earlier, if your headache is new, bad or changing then it is time to consult your doctor. If there is a loss of appetite, fever or weight loss along with a headache then you must consult a doctor. Headaches, if they are occurring in isolation, can be treated by taking an analgesic on the advice of a doctor.
High blood pressure during pregnancy may lead to stroke

It has been found that in more than 54 percent of women who suffer from high blood pressure during their pregnancy, the risk of getting a stroke is significantly higher. So, if you are expecting a baby and are continuously experiencing a headache then it is time you consult your doctor. Even if you aren t experiencing a continuous throbbing in your head but you do get an occasional headache, you must check with your gynaecologist. Do not go for self-medication, it is better to get a professional medical advice from a doctor in such cases.
Migraine affects more women than men

As per a study conducted by the Cleveland Clinic, it was concluded that women suffer from a migraine three times more than men. Another research suggested that a migraine is an inherited headache problem. A migraine when accompanied by aural vision, triggers pain behind the eyes and around temples. Migraine manifests in the form of flashing lights, vomiting and it is a must that you consult a doctor in such a case.
