What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) which spreads with through unprotected contact with many partners. It is one of the most common STDs that can be found, especially in countries like the USA. One should not have unprotected sexual contact with too many partners. This will help in avoiding conditions like Chlamydia, which is most common in women.
What are the symptoms of Chlamydia?

Chlamydia has very few symptoms, as mentioned above. Yet, there are a number of subtle and persistent symptoms that one should not ignore. These include vaginal discharge with some odor or smell. Also, one will experience pain in the vagina and abdomen along with some fever. The vaginal area will also cause much discomfort along with burning, bleeding and plenty of itching. In the case of such persistent symptoms, it is important to see the doctor for an immediate diagnosis so that the problem does not get worse.
Chlamydia is not treated with antibiotics.

One of the main forms of treatment for chlamydia includes the use of antibiotics. Once the diagnosis has been done with tests at the lab including cervical samples and urine samples, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics that will stop the growth and development of the infection causing bacteria. These antibiotics include azithromycin and doxycycline, both of which will be taken orally. One should have the full course of antibiotics so that the infection does not just clear up, but does not come back again. In case one stops the antibiotics midway or after some relief, then the infection can come back in a more severe form.
Severe cases of Chlamydia for women may require immediate hospitalization.

In case the symptoms are extremely severe and the fever and pain does not abate even with antibiotics, then the female patient may require hospitalization so that the doctors may observe the symptoms and prescribe the antibiotics accordingly. In such cases, intravenous antibiotics will be administered through a vein along with medication for the pain and cramps that one might be experiencing. Abstain from sexual contact until the treatment is over so that you and your partner will be safe.
It is important to get re tested for the infection after a few months.

It is important to get re tested for the disease after a period of two to three months so that one can be sure that the same has not come back again. During this period, one should abstain from sexual intercourse so that the chances of the disease coming back will be less. Chlamydia can cause severe pelvic disease if it remains untreated for a long period.
