Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vaginal mucosa. This is extremely common and can be caused by bacteria, fungus, or parasites. The vagina is an area which is prone to the high growth of bacteria and fungus, so when the conditions are conducive, infection here is highly likely. Though not always transmitted sexually, they are sometimes acquired through public washrooms too. Be very careful when using public restrooms; they are the most common cause of vaginitis.
What are some common symptoms associated with vaginitis?

Changes to the vaginal mucosa in terms of redness and itching is one of the first sign of vaginitis. The discharge could become thicker, be greenish in color, and have a foul smell depending on the source of the infection. If they appear, these symptoms should be closely observed and brought to a doctor?s notice. There could also be pain during urination and sexual intercourse. For any bump or itching, notice the change in color or size and seek help if the redness or itching increases.

Vaginitis is not a serious condition and often a wait and watch approach does the trick. However, if the discharge turns green or has a foul smell, it should be immediately looked into. Similarly, if the symptoms develop after a risky sexual encounter, they should be brought to medical notice. If you have had recurrent infections in the recent past, get medical help to rule out any underlying serious problems.
Vaginitis can be observed without any treatment done

Most cases of vaginitis do not require any treatment. Vaginal yeast infections are very common and if the symptoms resemble a prior episode, then no treatment is required. Topical antifungal cream may be used if required. However, if there is a change of symptoms, especially increasing redness or discharge, then medical help should be sought. This could require a course of antibiotics based on what is causing the infection ? bacteria or fungi or trichomonas. It is advisable to watch for change of symptoms even if you decide not to seek medical help.
Some women are more prone to develop vaginitis than others

Most women go through episodes of vaginitis multiple times in their lives. There are, however, certain risk factors for vaginitis including hormonal changes like menstruation or pregnancy, (risky sexual activity), poorly controlled diabetes, tight clothes, douching, etc. These make the vagina more susceptible to infection and therefore vaginitis is more common in them. Use chemicals in the vaginal mucosa with care ? be it shower gels or soaps or vaginal sprays. Often, these also could cause vaginitis.
