Food plays a crucial role in the body and the overall physical well-being of a person. However, most people are unaware of the impact that food has over the mind and personality of an individual. Your meals may be responsible for your bad temper and emotional outbursts as well. Here are five ways in which food influences your mood.

• Adrenal fatigue

While most cases of adrenal fatigue are caused due to stress, poor diet has also been linked to the same. People who drink excessive amounts of coffee and ingest sugar on a daily basis are at greater risk of adrenal fatigue than people who follow a balanced diet. If you want to prevent adrenal fatigue, stop eating refined carbohydrates, such as white rice, white bread, and pasta. Apart from affecting the mood, adrenal fatigue can also hamper the functionality of your immune system.

Hormonal imbalance

Even though hormonal imbalance is not caused directly due to your diet, the food can affect other organs in the body. If these organs function abnormally due to malnourishment, the resulting hormonal imbalance can lead to mood swings, loss of temper, and other similar problems.

• Poor digestion

Your gut performs the important function of absorbing nutrients from the foods you eat. Due to improper diet, you may suffer from indigestion, acid reflux and other similar problems. Not only do these disorders affect your bodily functions, but also hamper your mood. Therefore, it is essential to follow a balanced and healthy diet if you want to maintain a sunny disposition in life.

Depression

Research studies show that people who consume unhealthy foods for a long time are more likely to experience depression. The researchers categorized diets with high sugar and processed foods as unhealthy and riskier for certain mental disorders, such as depression.

• Sugar to reduce stress

When people are under stress, the body starts to crave sugar. This is because your body wants the energy from the sugar to charge it up. However, indulging in sugar consumption at such a time will only increase the feeling of stress. In fact, according to scientists, the best way to reduce stress is to exercise.

At the end of the day, you are what you eat. Therefore, keep your diet in mind and avoid eating processed and sugary items, to lift your spirits. If you need help preparing a diet chart, consult your nutritionist. He/she will prescribe you a health chart with a list of foods that you would need to stick to.
