Are you suffering from kidney cysts? Sometimes you do without even knowing about it. Moreover, if you are over 50 years of age, then it is highly likely that have one or more simple cysts in your kidneys. The symptoms are as mild as fever and back pain. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all.

Kidney cysts are round pouches of smooth, thin-walled tissue usually filled with fluid that occur on or inside your kidneys. Most kidney cysts are usually of a type called simple kidney cysts. In this condition, generally only one cyst occurs on the surface of a kidney, however there can be more than one cyst on one or both the kidneys.

Are you at a risk of simple kidney cysts?

Though the condition can affect you at any age, however as stated above the risk increases as you get older. Moreover, if you are a man then you are more prone to kidney cysts than women.

What causes cysts to develop on your kidneys?

Unfortunately, no one exactly knows about the causes of kidney cysts. According to one theory, a cyst develops when the surface of kidney weakens and forms a pouch which then fills with fluid. This fluid-filled pouch later detaches and develops into a cyst. In any case, the condition doesn't seem to be inherited.

Should you worry about kidney cysts?

Simple kidney cysts most often do not cause harm. But they are known to occasionally cause complications such as:

  • Urine obstruction: A cyst that obstructs your normal urine flow may lead to swelling of your kidney.
  • Infected cyst: In case a kidney cyst becomes infected, then it may cause fever and pain.
  • A burst cyst: If a cyst on your kidney bursts, then it may cause severe pain in your back or side.

You don't need treatment for simple kidney cysts if you are not experiencing any discomfort or health issue. In case you have any symptoms, then you should consult your doctor who will then decide the future course of treatment.
