A permanent disability such as loss of a limb can pose multi-dimensional challenges – besides affecting a person’s mobility, it also greatly impacts self-image and sensation. A relatively new branch of Psychology, namely Rehabilitation Psychology, can help patients cope with grief after amputation surgery

As the name suggests, Rehabilitation Psychology focuses on providing help and support to people with mental/physical disabilities following an illness or injury. Rehabilitation after amputation starts right after the surgery during the phase of acute treatment. As the condition of the patient improves, more extensive rehab program gets started.

Rehabilitation Program Techniques

A rehabilitation program for patients after amputation surgery typically includes the following techniques –

  • Treatments that help improve healing of wounds

  • Activities to enhance motor skills, restore functioning ability and help the person attain maximum independence

  • Specific exercises to promote endurance, muscle strength, and control

  • Emotional support to the patient during the grieving period – to help them adjust with a new body image

  • Vocational counselling

  • Family and patient education

  • Adapting the home environment for safety, ease of function, mobility and accessibility

How Effective is Rehabilitation Programs?

The effectiveness or success rate of rehabilitation programs depends on several factors, such as the following –

  • Type and level of amputation

  • Degree and type of any resulting disabilities and impairments

  • The general health of the patient

  • Family support

It is essential that the therapy focuses on maximizing the patient’s capabilities in the community and at home. Positive reinforcement can boost recovery by promoting independence and improving self-esteem. The program is designed to cater to the needs of each patient. Active participation of the concerned patient and family is of great importance to the success of psychological rehabilitation programs.

The goal of psychological rehabilitation following an amputation is to help the patient get back to his/her functional ability and live an independent life as possible, while promoting the overall quality of life – emotionally, physically, and socially.
