Developmental Check-Up!
developmental check up or screening for developmental problems should be done for every child at periodic intervals. The most important ages for developmental screening by a developmental paediatrician are 6months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months and thereafter once a year. This is important because the single key factor in success of developmental disabilities like autism, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), learning disabilities, cerebral palsy etc is early detection and early intervention. If you miss the diagnosis before 3years of age, the recovery rate is very low. But if you do treatment before 3years of age, even moderate to severe cases have very good results. This is because the brain is much more neuroplastic during first 3 years of life and can be modified and moulded. Most of the general paediatricians will say to wait until 3 years if the child has delay in milestones or delay in speech. But then your child will miss the most important period of intervention and treatment that is from birth to 3years. So never wait if your child shows developmental or speech delay. Get an appointment with a developmental paediatrician to screen for developmental problems if you see any delay in development of your child.
