Dialysis
Hi! I am Dr Siddhesh Dhaygude, Nephrologist, Pune. Today I will talk about dialysis. In this, the patient develops kidney failure. His kidneys are not functioning properly. Dialysis is done according to the clinical status of the patient. We see if there is any nausea, vomiting, the high potassium level in the blood. Usually, in chronic kidney disease or chronic renal failure, patients will require dialysis life long. The moment the patient will be recovered, dialysis can be stopped. We give the treatment with artificial kidney and it is called dialysis. Dialysis is of 2 types. Hemodialysis which we do in the hospital where we use machine and filter blood through an artificial kidney. 2nd is peritoneal dialysis in which fluid is given inside the abdomen. It is done in the home manually or by the help of the machine. An arteriovenous fistula is best for long term hemodialysis. This fistula takes 6 months for maturation. In case of emergency, we use the catheter. It can have the infection or bleeding can also happen. It is a must to go for dialysis. AV fistula has the minimum chances of getting an infection and it provides good health. The ideal modality is kidney transplant in those patients who have permanent kidney failure. Treatment is required for the patient of heart, diabetes, BP immediately. In India hemodialysis is a bit cheaper than the other one. So, we can choose the modality depending on the patient's need and choice. Thank You!
