Hello,

I am Dr. Shilpa Sankpal, Dermatologist. Today I will talk about hair loss. There are a lot of myths and facts about hair loss. Before talking about hair loss, we should understand about the hair cycle. HAir is always going under the 3 stages i.e anagen which is a growth phase, catagen which is a resting phase and the telogen which is a shading phase. In the anagen phase, hair is growing properly. In the resting phase, the growth will be stunted. And in the shading phase, the growth will fall off. This is a standard hair growth cycle. When it is a telogen phase, one will experience the hair loss more. Most of the time, people complain about hair loss. When somebody is losing more than 100-150 hair in a day, we call it as a hair fall.

But if somebody is losing less than 100 hair per day, we cannot call it hair loss as it is astandard thing happening. Along with if you are not getting hair growth properly, we consider it as a hair loss and we seek for the proper treatment. The hair loss can be because of many factors. First is the hereditary factor. If your parents or any relative were suffering from hair loss, you will also suffer from the same. 2nd is a diet. Nowadays, everyone is eating junk food. Because of this, we are not consuming proper nutrients, proteins in our daily diet. Hair is made up of protein which we call as keratin. So, we should eat more protein. Like in non-veg food, you can have eggs, fish, chicken. In veg, you can have broccoli, soy products, milk, paneer, all kind of sprouts, daals. So, you should have a proper balanced diet, rich in the protein for the proper hair growth. Another responsible thing is hair treatment. Like so many artificial things we do with our hair like straightening, curls.

So, these all includes heating of the hair, people apply chemicals in the hair which breaks the hair. Another is the coloring of the hair. Most of the hair colors contain ammonia and because of which hair become very brittle and hair can break from the shaft only. So, avoid all salon activities which damages the hair. Another reason for hair fall is a medical condition. If somebody is suffering from thyroid, most of the time females suffers from irregular menses, PCOS, female gets the lot of hormonal imbalance. In this condition, you should treat the underlying factors then your hair loss will be repairable. If you are suffering from dengue, malaria, typhoid or any kind of the medical illnesses, in the recent 6 months, your body is depleting all the nutrition. This will have the side-effects on the hair. As you know, hair is actually a dead organ of your body and it is not solving the important purpose of your body as compared to the other body organs.

So, whenever the body is deficient of the nutrients, it will try to provide all the important nutrient to the other required organs of the body first. So, understand the importance of nutrition in hair fall. Another thing the washing of the hair. Hot and cold water can damage your hair shaft. It can make your hair dry and frizzy. So, you should not wash your hair with very hot and cold water. You should wash with the lukewarm water. You should not rub your hair immediately after washing the hair. You should not use the hairdryer frequently. So, these are things about hair loss. So, for the treatment, you should solve all your problems. You should visit nearby dermatologist. Accordingly, they will give the required supplements. There are shampoos which are sulfate-free which are very safe for the hair.
