Heart Failure: Can High Blood Pressure Be The Reason?
Dr. GarimaGeneral Physician • 4 Years Exp.MNAMS (Membership of the National Academy) (Ophthalmology)
High blood pressure can cause serious damage to your body and overall health with time. If you do not manage it well, a poor quality of life is likely to follow. And, those who are suffering from blood pressure issues, their heart has to work harder to push blood throughout the body. So, to cope with this extra effort, your heart becomes thicker and stiffer, and this as a result hampers its ability of working efficiently.
Important is to understand that uncontrolled blood pressure can have a number of negative effects of your heart. Some of which are:
- Coronary artery disease - This is a disease of the arteries supplying blood and oxygen to the heart that cause decreased blood flow to heart muscle. If the arteries get blocked or narrowed (due to the buildup of fatty deposits), the heart fails to get oxygen and nutrients, which may eventually lead to heart failure.
- Heart attack - If the plaque formed by fatty deposits in the arteries rupture and leading to blood clot that may block blood flow to an area of the heart muscle can cause a heart attack.
- Heart muscle weakness - This condition can have many causes including diseases, infections, drug and alcohol abuse. Genetic factors may also contribute to the weakening of heart muscles.
- Heart failure - When your heart is unable to pump the blood as efficiently as it should, this condition is defined as a heart failure. It can cause extra fluid to build up in your body, and lead to irregular heartbeats. However, this does not mean that your heart will stop working. But heart failure is a serious condition and needs immediate medical care.
