The most common cause of food poisoning is unhygienic street food contaminated with various types of viruses and bacteria which causes infection. The symptoms of food poisoning may include fever, stomachache, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, etc.
Millions of people are affected by food poisoning every year but only a few of them require hospitalisation because many of the cases resolve on their own without treatment. The various types of organisms which cause food poisoning include Salmonella which is found in raw eggs, Staphylococcus aureus which is present in dairy products, E coli bacteria present in undercooked meat and raw vegetables.
Usually, the most common cause is under cooking of any food because heat can kill all types of bacteria and viruses but if the food is not properly cooked then they get a chance to get into our plates.
In this article we are going to discuss a few remedies which can subside the effects of food poisoning quickly.
Home remedies to subside food poisioning effects
- Apple cider vinegar: One to two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar can be consumed along with hot water, generally before meals, to get rid of the excessive acid produced due to food poisoning because it has alkaline effect and if it does not better your condition you can also consume and diluted apple cider vinegar to get instant relief.
- Lemon: It is one of the best remedies to cure food poisoning as it has antiviral antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and can be consumed along with hot water or mixed with sugar.
- Garlic: It can be used in many ways to cure food poisoning. You can eat a crown of garlic daily with a glass of water but if you can't stand the bitter taste of garlic then you can prefer mixing it with soybean oil and massaging on the stomach to get relief from stomach ache.
- Honey: Honey is known for its various benefits from ancient times and can also be used to cure food poisoning. It can be consumed directly or can be mixed with tea but as it has a sweet taste, people prefer consuming it directly.
- Ginger: Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and is known to cure various symptoms of food poisoning. It can be consumed after boiling it along with water and you can mix any sweetener such as honey or sugar to avoid the bitter taste. However if you can withstand its bitter taste you can consume it directly.
- Curd: Curd can be very useful in treating food poisoning as its antibacterial properties help in fighting the bacteria causing the food poisoning.
- Fenugreek seeds: fenugreek seeds must be consumed without chewing as it is high in fibre content and increases bulk of the stool and its lubricating properties help in relieving abdominal discomfort and pain.
- Cold milk: Cold milk can also be very useful in getting rid of the symptoms of food poisoning as it soothes the stomach and helps in reducing acid production as well as acid reflux.
- Water: Not only in food poisoning but also in normal conditions it is advise to drink plenty of water as it helps in flushing out the toxins from our body and on an average we should drink about 3 to 4 litres of water per day in summers and 2 to 3 litres of water in winters. This variation of water consumption in summers and winters is due to the fact that in summers our body loses water due to urination as well as sweating but in winters sweating is generally absent and our body loses water only through urination.
- Cumin seeds: You can boil cumin seeds in a cup of water and add salt and heeng to it and consume it to speed up digestion and get relief from food poisoning.
- Basil: It is generally known by the name Tulsi and is available in almost every household. It has medicinal properties and anti-inflammatory properties and helps in correcting the pH levels of our body by balancing the acid production of our body. You can add a few drops of basil in water and consume it daily to get relief from food poisoning.
- Apple: Apple helps in reducing acid reflux and also helps to get relief from food poisoning by preventing the bacteria from growing which cause stomach pain.
- Coriander: Coriander is present almost in every household but very few of us are aware of the medicinal properties of coriander. It soothes our stomach after it is injured with any infection. You can drink a glass of water mixed with coriander leaves kept overnight.
