Irregular periods are a common problem in women. There are many reasons responsible for irregular periods which may include certain hormonal or anti inflammatory medications or IUD birth control. Changes in harmones such as excess production of estrogen or progestin may cause heavy bleeding and this occurs in women who have started their menstrual cycle or are approaching menopause. Also, certain diseases such as certain blood disorders, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory diseases and cancers may cause the periods to become irregular.

According to studies it may take about 5 to 6 years to develop a regular menstrual cycle after starting menstruation but if the irregular periods are due to an underlying cause the cause needs to be resolved first otherwise the condition may not improve.

Also, there is a myth that if a woman gets irregular periods then she can't become pregnant. The underlying cause of the irregular periods is the factor which governs the fact that whether a woman will become pregnant or not.

In this article we are going to discuss a few home remedies which help in getting periods and they include-

  • Maintaining healthy body weight - Maintaining healthy body weight is also important for overall health but it also has an impact on the menstrual cycle. Women having a healthy body weight do not face many problems in their menstrual cycle. On the contrary women who are obese tend to feel more pain and bleeding during their menstrual cycle with their cycle being irregular. Although it is not necessary that if a woman is obese she must be having irregular periods but they are at a higher probability of getting irregular periods. Also it must be kept in mind that if being overweight is harmful then being underweight is also harmful hence if a person is underweight she too is at a risk of getting irregular periods. So it is very important to maintain a moderate body weight.
  • Regular exercise - Exercising regularly can help to achieve a moderate body weight and reduction in pain during menstruation. In a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome in which irregular periods are observed in the patient, exercise is a part of the treatment plan.
  • Practising yoga - Studies show that women who practise yoga experience reduction in pain and fewer cramps during the menstrual cycle with their cycle becoming regular. Along with the regularity of the cycle yoga has a deep impact on other emotional aspects such as anxiety and depression and helps a lot in tackling these situations. Studies also show that yoga helps to regulate hormonal levels. With the technology becoming advanced and increasing awareness there are many videos available of teachers who teach the correct way of practising yoga and that too free of cost. So it has become easier to learn the correct way of yoga.
  • Ginger - Although there is no scientific evidence that Ginger helps in making the periods regular, it has several other benefits related to menstrual cycle such as relieving pain, improving mood and reducing loss of excessive blood.
  • Vitamins - Studies show the impact of vitamins on periods. Study linked vitamin D deficiency to irregular periods hence including foods rich in vitamin D in our diet may help to get regular periods. The most common source of vitamin D is sunlight and dairy products such as milk etc. A reduction in symptoms was observed in patients suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome after taking Vitamin B6 supplements. But it is very important to consult a doctor before taking any supplements.
  • Apple cider vinegar - Although there is no conclusive evidence whether apple cider vinegar helps to regulate your periods, studies have shown a positive impact of consuming apple cider vinegar on periods and helped people to get periods while they were suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome. Many people have a problem with the taste of apple cider vinegar, if you have the same problem try adding honey or diluting it with water to reduce the bitterness.
  • Pineapple - Pineapple contains bromelain which has anti inflammatory properties and helps to soften the lining of the uterus which further helps in getting regular periods although there is no conclusive evidence about it.
  • Cinnamon - Cinnamon has shown positive response and the treatment of irregular menstruation and has also shown to reduce bleeding and menstrual pain and is regarded as a good natural treatment for irregular periods.

Although these remedies may help you in getting regular periods, it is always advised to take advice from a gynaecologist before trying these remedies.
