Prehypertension is a forewarning that a patient is highly susceptible to getting afflicted with high blood pressure in the near future. It is the first stage of hypertension – where your blood pressure falls between 120-139 mmHg (systolic) and 80-89 mmHg (diastolic).

Prehypertension can indicate changes in the body that may result in heart disease. The increase in blood pressure can also damage the heart and blood vessels. Moreover, it can also create problems for the kidneys.

Risk Group for Prehypertension

Approximately half of the adults around the world aged eighteen years and above are at a high risk of suffering from hypertension or prehypertension. Those who are diagnosed with prehypertension are also extremely susceptible to suffering from other health conditions such as obesity, high cholesterol levels, and diabetes.

Treatment for Hypertension:

Some alterations to your life that will help you manage your prehypertension better include -

• Losing Weight- If the patient is overweight then the risk of high blood pressure increases manifolds. By losing the extra fat you can reduce the chances of hypertension by about 20%.

• Maintain a Disciplined Exercise Routine- Exercising regularly is instrumental for lowering blood pressure.

• Follow a DASH diet- This diet involves consuming fruits, low-fat dairy, fish, whole grains and vegetables. These items are low in sodium but high in nutrients such as protein, potassium, magnesium, fibre, and calcium. A diet containing less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium will subsequently lower the chances of developing high blood pressure.

• Restrict Alcohol- Excessive alcohol consumption increases high blood pressure drastically. So ensure to restrict alcohol consumption to moderate amounts.

Although a well-monitored and disciplined lifestyle is bound to prevent prehypertension, it is advised that you get an annual check-up done for diagnosis and early treatment if the need arises.
