High blood pressure can silently cause serious damage to your body over the years. And, if it is not controlled, it can even result in fatal health outcomes. One such outcome of this condition is a ‘stroke’. A stroke is often called as a brain attack. Also, hypertension is the leading risk factor for it.

A stroke is caused when the supply of blood to a particular region of the brain is cut off. The brain cells which are deprived of the oxygen and glucose die, and when the ailment is not caught early, a permanent damage to the brain can follow.

The connection between high blood pressure and stroke

Uncontrolled blood pressure levels can increase the risk of a stroke by about four to six times. Overtime, hypertension can cause atherosclerosis and hardening of major arteries. This often results in blockages of small blood vessels present in the brain. With high blood pressure for a long period of time, the blood vessels of the brain become weak and burst. In this way the risk of a stroke is directly related to the high levels of blood pressure.

Keeping your blood pressure under control

  • To stay healthy and to avoid suffering from various life-threatening complications, proper treatment and some simple lifestyle changes are a must.
  • Starting with controlling your weight, note that generally, a man with a waistline of over 40 inches and a woman with that over 35 inches is at a higher risk of suffering from high BP and a stroke.
  • You should exercise regularly for at least half an hour and eat a well-planned diet loaded with fibre, proteins, potassium and Omega-3 fatty acids. Stay away from junk food.
  • Don’t eat too much sugar or salt, both of these can impact your BP. Also, avoid eating foods which have artificial sweeteners.
  • Avoid taking too much stress. You can practice yoga or medication to relax yourself.

And, even if after following a healthy routine your BP still remains high, then it is crucial to consult a doctor. Your doctor can help you by prescribing medications that are right for your medical condition.
