Kidney failure is a sudden breakdown of both kidneys. As an individual has two kidneys, if one kidney is diseased or breaks down, it can be eliminated, and the available healthy kidney may start working in the normal way. If both kidneys of a patient are diseased or wounded, then the patient has to undergo kidney transplantation.

Kidney failure may happen because of a sensitive situation that harms the kidneys or due to chronic infections that cause the kidneys to stop working in a gradual way. During the sensitive renal breakdown, the kidneys may lose their function quickly and it may happen due to a range of abuses to the body.

The common causes that make kidneys break down may be due Prerenal reasons or Renal reasons.

Prerenal reasons are the ones that deliver less amount of blood to the kidneys. These may happen due to:

  • Low volume of blood due to bleeding

  • Dehydration because of loss of body liquid due to diarrhea, vomiting, fever, sweating, etc.

  • Poor ingestion of liquids

  • Medications, such as diuretics

  • Irregular flow of blood from and to the kidney because of the blockage of the renal vein or artery

Renal reasons are the ones that harm the kidneys directly. These may happen due to:

  • Sepsis: In this condition, the immune system of the body is plagued due to infection. This will result in swelling and will break down the kidneys. Of course, this is usually a rare cause, which does not happen with normal urinary tract diseases.

  • Medicines: Some medicines that are used for other medical conditions may cause side effects to the patient, which in turn, may affect the kidneys. These medicines include nonsteroidal anti-provocative medicines, antibiotics, lithium, iodine included medicines, etc.

  • Rhabdomyolysis: When Rhabdomyolysis occurs, patients may come across a considerable muscle breakage in their body, and the injured muscle fibers will block the filtering function of the kidneys. A substantial muscle wound may take place due to crush injuries, trauma, and burns. Patients taking medicines to treat their high blood pressure may suffer from Rhabdomyolysis as well.
