Nicotine addiction, often known as tobacco addiction, is a severe addiction to tobacco products caused mostly by the presence of the nicotine chemical. To put it another way, nicotine addiction is the inability to stop using tobacco products while knowing that they are damaging to your health. While nicotine alone causes addiction, the inclusion of other compounds in tobacco causes it to be harmful to one's health.

Nicotine has the ability to create physical and mental changes in the brain that provide transient enjoyment. This is precisely why individuals are drawn into the practice of smoking, which eventually leads to addiction. Unfortunately, abruptly ceasing to consume cigarettes can cause withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety and restlessness.

Why does it happen?

Nicotine releases neurotransmitters like dopamine in the reward area of the brain, which enhances your mood and offers you brief pleasure. This is the fundamental reason why tobacco is so addictive.

Nicotine addiction can be caused by either physical or behavioral factors, such as events or sensations that make you feel the need for cigarettes. These are some of them:

  • At certain periods throughout the day, such as after each meal or during work breaks

  • While defecating

  • While consuming alcoholic beverages

  • Situations that are stressful or depressing

  • When confronted with the sight or smell of a smoldering cigarette

  • Peer influence

  • When you're driving

Symptoms Of Nicotine Addiction Include The Following:

  • Unable to quit smoking.

  • After attempting to quit, you encounter withdrawal symptoms.

  • You continue to smoke regardless of its health hazards.

  • You avoid social and recreational activities because you have a strong desire to smoke.

Symptoms Of Withdrawal Include:

  • Urges to smoke

  • Agitation or inability to concentrate

  • Sleep problems and difficulty sleeping

  • Irritability, anger, anxiety, sobbing, sorrow, or depression are all symptoms of depression

  • An increase in appetite or weight gain is a sign that something is wrong

  • Feeling dizzy or light-headed

  • Ulcers in the mouth

Where To Go If You Want To Quit?

If the patient has made the decision to stop smoking and other forms of nicotine usage, he/she should see a Psychiatrist right away for assistance in strengthening his or her willpower against these drugs. Nicotine addiction is treatable, but quitting takes a lot of determination because it is the most addicting chemical on the planet. It renders people addicted to it, making quitting very hard.
