Hello,

I am Dr. Rachna Singh and today we will speak about pigmentation. Pigmentation is a medical term usually people call it as darkening of the skin, blackening of the skin. So, how pigmentation happened? Our skin has cells that produce pigment which is usually called melanin and that melanin is responsible for the pigmentation of the skin. If the production is increased, if the accumulation of the melanin happens, the pigmentation happens. The foremost reason is the exposure to the sunlight and the invisible light. Nowadays, we spend most of the time, when we are indoor as well, we spend most of the time in front of the smartphone, in front of our screens, that radiate UVA radiation, and by the sun we get UVB radiation, so because of these factors, if we are not applying SPF that is sun protection factor, pigmentation happens. Sometimes it happens in females who are pregnant, because of the hormonal imbalance, overproduction of melanocyte happens and females got pigmentation, this condition is usually called chloasma or melasma. The other thing is that its post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Some people acquire pigmentation after their injury or after any sort of trauma. And there are sunspots as well, there are freckles as well usually who has a fair skin complexion and which people go out in the sun without SPF, without sunblocks and the accumulation of melanin happens and they got freckles. Now the age group is, pigmentation can happen in any age group, there is no gender differentiation, any person can acquire pigmentation whether it is a female or male. Now, how we treat it? As I told you is the very much must thing is sunscreen, sun protection factor, in India, in Asia it is recommended that we usually use between 30 to 50 sun protection factors and that should be applied three times in a day minimum. The other thing is that there are various treatments to cure pigmentation, like, peels, chemical peels, like lasers, which is usually pico lasers, Q switch lasers, there are certain creams as well. So for that and now the question is safety, how safe are the treatments? They all are FDA approved and safe treatments and they are into sessions, you require multiple sessions to cure your pigmentation, there is no downtime, they are lunchtime procedures. So you can come to avail the session and get rid of your pigmentation. For further queries, do contact us through Lybrate and relieve your pigmentation. Have a great day.
