The Mellow Effect Of Music On Stress!
Dr. Rakhi AnandPsychologist • 34 Years Exp.PhD - Clinical Psychology, Diploma in Clinical and Community Psychology, MA - Clinical Psychology, BA - Psychology
- Music is a major relaxation technique used across different age groups. Music helps in soothing the mind and release many “feel good” hormones.
- The use of listening to music as an economic, non-invasive, and highly accepted intervention tool has received special interest in the management of stress and stress-related health issues.
- Current findings indicate that music around 60 beats per minute can cause the brain to synchronise with the beat causing alpha brainwaves (frequencies from 8 - 14 hertz or cycles per second). This alpha brainwave is what is present when we are relaxed and conscious.
- To induce sleep (a delta brainwave of 5 hertz), a person may need to devote at least 45 minutes, in a relaxed position, listening to calming music.
- Listening to music triggers the release of dopamine in your brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that promotes feelings of happiness and excitement.
- Listening to music can lower your body’s levels of cortisol, a hormone that can contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety.
- In high-stress situations such as surgery, music has been proven to keep patients’ stress levels under control.
- As a result of stress and anxiety reduction, music can also contribute to better sleep habits.
- Listening to music before going to bed has been shown to improve sleeping patterns and can be used to treat insomnia.
- Since sleeping is another natural stress-reducer, the cycle of listening to music to reduce stress will also result in lower stress levels experienced as a result of better sleep habits.
