The Objectives Of Celebrating World Population Day!
World Population Day is an initiative by the Governing Council of the United Nations’ Development Programme. It was first introduced in the year 1989 and has been an annual event ever since. The day, observed on July 11 every year, aims to raise awareness about the escalating global population and the importance of reproductive health.
With India’s population skyrocketing and reproductive health problems contributing to the death, disability, and poor health of the people, the United Nations’ Governing Council aims to draw the attention of the people across the globe to issues, such as birth control and family planning, through various campaigns on World Population Day. Such campaigns play a vital role in encouraging youngsters, particularly women, to learn about their rights, sex education, adolescent pregnancies, and family planning.
Given that an estimated 15 million women between the age of 15 years and 19 years give birth and approximately 4 million of them undergo abortion every year, the importance of imparting proper education and knowledge on sex-related issues cannot be stressed enough. World Population Day strives to achieve this goal through various discussions, seminars, and campaigns.
Listed below are the objectives of World Population Day –
-
To educate teenagers and young adults
-
To provide people with easy and cheap access to reproductive healthcare services, contraceptives etc.
-
To encourage and educate people to come out of gender stereotypes
-
To educate people about the risk of sexually transmitted diseases resulting from unprotected sex
-
To make people understand the importance of delayed sex and marriage until they are responsible enough to bear the responsibility
-
To educate youngsters about various preventive measures to avoid multiple or unplanned pregnancies
-
To raise awareness among women about the various complications related to early pregnancy and childbirth
-
To provide the youth with easy access to basic education
-
To promote family planning and implement effective policies, laws to secure the rights of the female child
Although World Population Day is recognized all over the world, calling for people’s attention alone is not enough to address the issue of overpopulation. The government, along with the various health organizations and NGOs, must come forward and act appropriately to meet the above objectives and fix the problem. With safe sex practices, better education and awareness, we might be able to make steady progress in the years to come.
