Traumatic Wound - How To Take Care Of It?
Traumatic Wounds are basically cutting, mutilation and puncture lesion. In this, the skin and tissues underneath it are damaged. These can be minor or severe depending upon
the amount of damage caused by the wound. There are basically three types of traumatic wounds depending upon their level of severity.
The first type is Acute wounds in which the skin is ripped off with a rugged appearance. Another type of Traumatic Wound is Cut Wound in which a sharp object punctures the skin and tissues underneath it. Third and the last type of the Traumatic Wound which is also the severity of the three is the Penetrating Wound which is caused by gunshot or stabbing.
Causes of Traumatic Wound-
There can be several reasons or causes of these Traumatic Wounds. Some of them are:
Accidents
Animal Bites
Cuts, usually those happening with knives
Scrapping off the skin against rough surface or glass
Gunshots can have both entry and exit injuries
Treatment-
The treatment of Traumatic Wounds depends upon its severity. If it is a cut or scrapes off the skin, it can be treated at home with dressing, but if it is severe as gunshot and stabbing, then one needs to go through surgery and it is life-threatening. To recover from the penetrating Traumatic Wounds, one needs a good amount of time and sometimes physical therapies post-surgeries. Obviously, there are various treatments depending upon the type of Traumatic Wound, but there is a very common idea behind every treatment and general procedure.
First of all, in all the Traumatic Wounds, the injured area is cleaned with sterile saline solution to make it dirt free and apply antibiotic cream or gel to prevent infection. The wound is then covered with a bandage to protect it from further injury and infection. These acute Traumatic Wounds heal really fast and sometimes do not even need a dressing. In the Penetrating Traumatic Wounds, one needs to be operated under anesthesia. The wound is cleaned and the bullet or anything in the wound is taken out. After proper cleaning and ensuring that nothing is left inside the wound, the injured part is stitched and covered with the bandage. Throughout the treatment, the patient is monitored as these types of injuries can result in an excess amount of blood loss. An individual takes quite a long time to recover from these kinds of Traumatic Wounds depending upon the part of the body which is injured. In an Abrasion, the wound is cleaned and made dirt free and bandaged. It is not as serious as the Penetrating Traumatic Wounds.
Take Away-
Traumatic Wounds are sudden injuries which can be caused by a number of reasons. They can be as minor as a cut and as severe as a gunshot. Their treatment depends upon the severity of the Traumatic Wound. But sometimes, minor Traumatic Wounds can lead to infections if not cleaned or caused by some infected object or animal. Minor Traumatic Wounds can be treated by the local doctor, but the severe ones such as a gunshot need immediate medical care as it can lead to death if not treated rightly and on time.
