Things You Must Know About Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

Coronary artery bypass is a kind of open heart surgery.  It is carried out if there is a build up of plaque or cholesterol in the arteries, because of which blood cannot be supplied properly. If this condition is not treated, it can lead to a heart attack.

What is the procedure?

This is a complicated operation and it usually takes 3 to 6 hours to complete the surgery. In this procedure, a bypass is grafted from your chest or wrist, or a vein from your leg, so that a normal blood flow level can be maintained. There can be multiple grafts that may be required during a surgery, depending upon the blockage.

Your doctor would suggest a few tests before deciding upon the surgery like blood tests, chest X-rays, and an electrocardiogram (EKG)

What to do after surgery?

It normally requires a stay of 4 or 5 days in the hospital where you will be taken care of by the healthcare professionals. But it is important to take care of oneself after you reach home. You should take rest of 4 to 6 weeks after your surgery before returning to the desk job and in case your job requires physical work you would need extra time for recovery. Some of the other important points that you should be cautious about so that blockage of arteries can be prevented are:

  • Avoid smoking

  • Take medicines as prescribed

  • Include some kind of physical activity, but it is important to talk to your doctor before starting it

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

  • Avoid unsaturated fats and junk foods, add more vegetables, whole grains, and fruits to your diet

  • Avoid stress

CABG is a safe procedure with long term benefits. It has a high success and survival rate. It is best to discuss about the procedure in detail with your doctor if you have any doubts.
