My question is for all the doctors. I have been suffering from depression, anxiety and ocd from 8 years and also taking medicines (serta 100 and risdone plus) for it since 5-6 years. But medicines are not curing me completely so now I have came to know about lot of mental illness patients who has got fully cured with the help of meditation so I asked my doctor for meditation and she said don't do meditation. I do not know why she denied me to do meditation. Does these doctors are money making people? Literally I was able to recognize that she is lining and trying to make more money from me. Please doctors help me. Why does doctors only want to make money! I felt really bad. I had lot of trust on her but yesterday I felt really bad. What you all think? She correct I am misunderstanding her?

Dear lybrate-user, it is not true that the doctors are lining and make more money from you. Even if you go to a government hospital free treatment (the state is obliged to give reasonable treatment for you), you will get the same advice. They are trained and taught to give evidence based treatment to you. They are made to follow treatment protocols by the medical council of india (mci). For meditation practice, you should not consult doctors. Your friends will suggest someone or they themselves will teach meditation for you. They are not covered by evidences, mci or treatment guidelines.

Sir, as you have mentioned that you have multiple psychiatric illnesses. You can be rest assured that all (qualified) doctors want to cure their patients and money is last thing on our mind while treating patients. In usa a single psychiatric consultation (without medication) costs 8000 to 16000 rupees and that to after 15 days of appointment. So if you feel your doctor has been unfair, you have the liberty to go to another one and even show yourself to a government doctor. Lastly ocd is a disease which persists for long even after long treatment, so I will suggest that you should be a part of treatment and maintain drug adherence for your own good.

Usually, relaxation therapies are not much advised in depression patients, as there is risk of potential self harm. Most doctors are not money minded and follow medical ethics. But due to recent trends of assaulting doctors and calling us 'money minded' we will no longer offer our services at cheap rate, as we did in the past.

Your doctor is not making money but giving you good advice. Your condition is not as simple as it appears and needs a lot of treatment. Your problems showed up around your late teens, and is a very vulnerable stage. This means that there were some mitigating circumstances in early childhood. This needs to be investigated. The reason the doctor advised you not to go for meditation is probably that it is ill-advised in your current state of mind to do unguided meditation: you should do only guided meditation after some stability. The medication you are on is very apt, and only if your symptoms are not going away, you need to seek a second opinion. Whichever way it goes, you must seek the help of a counselor because relying only on medication is insufficient. Anyway, life is full of problems as a norm. Any attempts to escape will never help: you must learn to face these problems every day with good success. The counselor will help you in this regard. I also strongly believe that every crisis offers an opportunity for change, if you seek it and grab the opportunity. Please meet with a counselor and work on your emotions, particularly anger and fear. Exercise is very important but you have to build on it developmentally. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend yoga classes, etc. Watch sitcoms on tv or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it, and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in god to alleviate your sufferings. Don?t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard work must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.
