Hello, yes a cap is must otherwise the tooth will break. Capping will restore the damaged tooth strength.

Self motivation is the best way. The chewing gums in the market are just to help you with quitting but you need to be strong willed.

It needs to be checked if any sharp edges of the teeth are not causing trauma to the teeth if that's ruled out vitamin deficiency can be the other reason.

The reason for pain has to be found out. It can be tooth decay. Or something else, get it checked by a dentist.

You can ask your dentist for nightguard. It is acrylic /plastic made tray to get rid of habit of teeth grinding.
