Bone Spur: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Dec 10, 2024

What is the treatment?

Osteophytes

How is the treatment done?

Bone Spur treatments help patients get rid of the bony projections which start developing in between two bones. The bone spur can also start forming on the bones of your spine and should be immediately treated as it may cause a serious problem to your back. Most bone spurs do not show any symptoms and go undetected for a very long period of time. An X-ray can be helpful in diagnosing the issue. A laminectomy surgery can help affected individuals get rid of the problem. This surgery helps in relieving the pain as it removes the bone spurs and thickened ligaments which cause the painful compression on the nerve.

There are other non-surgical treatments available for bone spurs as well. Certain anti-inflammatory medications and muscle relaxant pain medications can also help those in need. Using these medications for 4 to 6 weeks can be very helpful. Rehabilitation therapies are also useful as these therapies help in restoring flexibility and strength to the neck and back as well. Certain injections are also available to reduce the joint swelling and improving spinal pain as well. However, a lot of patients who undergo the laminectomy surgery report a reduction in pain and gaining relief with the passing years.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

In order to treat bone spur, patients can opt for laminectomy surgeries which help in relieving the pain. Bone spurs are detected by radiological testing like X-rays, ultrasound imaging, CT scans, MRI scans and myelograms as well. The initial treatment for bone spur focuses on decreasing the inflammation. Doctors do not suggest treatment unless the pain increases. You may be advised to lose weight as a way of reducing some pressure from the joints. You should also stretch the areas which are affected like the bottom of the foot or the heel cord.

An ultrasound or a deep tissue massage maybe helpful as well. A surgery is often required to remove or replace a joint which has been considerably deformed or damaged by osteoarthritis. Non steroids anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can also be used in treating the condition. In case there is a bone spur in your foot, changing your footwear by adding padding to them may also help. Cold compression is also another method of treating the bone spur if it is in an accessible spot.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Any individual who is suffering from pain in their heels and any other joints should get themselves checked. Usually the symptoms are un detected and are found much later through a diagnosis for some other issue.

Are there any side effects?

People who do not have any pain in their joints and do not show any other symptom are not eligible for the treatment.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

The surgery may cause problems like chest pain, very high fever, difficulty in urinating and breathing, loss of bowel or urinary control among other side effects.

How long does it take to recover?

Patients who have just recovered from the surgery should keep a check on their weight and exercise regularly in order to reduce the pressure on their joints. Maintaining a healthy diet is also very important after the treatment. If the bone spur is on your foot then wearing comfortable or padded shoes can be very comforting. You should get your shoes fitted by a doctor so that they do not cause any more trouble.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

It takes a few days to recover from a bone spur surgery. The amount of time required for healing depends on the type of bone spur and the kind of surgery you have had. It takes approximately a few weeks to resume normal activities.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The Price of a treatment for a bone spur surgery can be roughly around Rs 50,000.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Bone spur can be completely cured after getting the surgery. The condition can also go on its own it treated with home remedies properly.
