Cosmetic Treatments: Treatment, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Dec 10, 2024

What are Cosmetic Treatments?

These are treatments which aim at improving one’s physical appearances. These treatments are available for almost all parts of the body. The thing is that you should have the right motivation, strength, and a sure decision. You can often get permanent results. A counseling is planned before the surgery if the person has symptoms of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) or when the surgeon feels that the particular problem cannot be resolved by the surgery. Another type of surgery knows as reconstructive surgery imparts normal appearance and improves the body functioning. The different types of treatments available for skin and the face are:

  1. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery: it eliminates the excess skin and fat and gives a new intact shape to eyelids.
  2. Rhinoplasty: aims at improving the shape of the nose thereby giving an overall improved appearance and breathing.
  3. Otoplasty: misshaped ears are treated and is pinned closer to the head giving an intact look.
  4. Rhytidectomy: it is done to remove wrinkles and impart a youthful appearance by tightening the facial skin. This is also known as a facelift.
  5. Chin augmentation is done to makes the chin prominent and ensures improved facial features.
  6. Other than this there are breast reduction techniques, hair transplantation and laser cosmetic surgeries are available for all parts of the body.

How is the treatment done?

Some surgeries require anaesthesia or intravenous sedation (IV). The procedure is carried out after giving anaesthesia by a nurse anaesthetist or anaesthesiologist. Facial fillers and injections are often performed under local anaesthesia.

  1. Eyes: Crow’s feet are usually treated with Botox which is a kind of injectable injected into the lateral extension just above the crow’s feet in the eyebrow. The skin care treatment for the same is eye serum composed of Ferulic + Retinol Triple Correction. For dropping eyelids, the extra hanging out skin is removed using a surgery in an hour under sedation and local anaesthesia. Also, Botox injections are used to prevent them from pulling down.
  2. Skin: Sagging of the skin is eliminated by a surgery which will tighten the skin towards the side of the face and on the jawline. Fillers are injected around cheeks, mouth, and jawlines where sagging is identified. This can tighten the skins in these areas. Many massage cream masks are also available.
  3. Sun damages are often treated using intense pulsed light which can remove the liver spots (red and brown spots) under the skin. Lines and deep furrows are treated using Botox and fillers.
  4. Vein: A vascular laser is carried out to treat broken veins. The laser light will pick up the haemoglobin’s pink and converts them into thermal energy which will break up the blood vessel.
  5. Nose: Nose reshaping has now taken a new face. Instead of reducing the skin, rebalancing is done to impart a natural appearance. Some dermal filler is used as an alternative to the surgery for those who need a small amount of augmentation. Dull skin is treated using laser resurfacing. They are effective with less downtime. The wrinkly neck is treated in such a way that skin under the neck is removed and is pulled into a sharper angle. This is often combined with lip suction and chin augmentation.
  6. Age spots: Age spots are removed using Microdermabrasion. It is commonly known as lunchtime wrinkle treatment. Tiny crystals are sprayed into the surface of the skin using hand-held equipment. The crystals can shed the upper layers of the skin and the light suction parallel removes the dead skin cells. More than one session might be required for removing wrinkles and pigmented marks.
  7. Lips :Lip suctions involves cannula(stainless steel tube) which will be attached to a suction pump which will suck out the unwanted fatty tissues by making small incisions throughout the body. Similarly, chin and cheek surgeries involve removing the extra fatty tissues thereby tightening the skin and giving a young look. There is some dermal filler composed of “hyaluronic acid” which has outweighed collagen which was the common dermal fillers. The new method is safer and has a long-lasting effect. There are some fat injections and implanting methods for lip plumping. Lip enlargement, reduction, reshaping are the common methods used to achieve an improved look.

Who is eligible for the treatment?(When is the treatment done ?)

Eligibility depends on the type of surgery you are opting for. Tummy and breast surgery will not be performed on pregnant ladies and breast feeders. Nose surgery demands an age of 16 and above. Unbalanced or abnormal physical features which make appearance bad will only be considered cosmetic treatments. Minor flaws and issues will be taken care of by some alternative therapy and exercises. You must be ideally fit and should not be a one who takes severe medications as well.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Pregnant ladies, breast feeders, anaemic people and people with minor issues will not be considered for the treatment.

Are there any Side Effects?

The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery must be consulted with a local practitioner or family doctor. The common side effects of the surgery are as follows:

  • There are chances of stroke.
  • Some tend to have visual disturbances.
  • Often unusual pain might occur.
  • A white skin starts appearing near the injection site.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Use non-soap cleansers, fragrance-free moisturizers, and mild non-allergic skin care products. Take care and be cautious about sun protection. Keep your body hydrated and be patient until your wound heals. Follow the medications given by the surgeon and if any unexpected symptoms occur consult immediately.

How long does it take to recover?

As most of the treatments nowadays are nonsurgical, they require minimal recovery time. The recovery time solely depends on the procedure. In most cases, you can get back to normal activities within a day or two. Surgery which includes lips might require few additional days to recover.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

India is emerging as one among the best place to provide beauty treatments. We are now well equipped with trained professional for cosmetic treatments. It is finalized after assessing your skin and the body. It depends on the type of the procedure that is fixed for you. Facelift procedures range from Rs 60,000 -1, 20,000. Lip surgeries ranges from Rs 40,000- Rs 65,000. The different variants of nose surgery lie within Rs 20,000-1, 20,000. On an average, it ranges around Rs. 70,000-2, 00,000 in India.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

No two persons will have the same results. The cosmetic treatments are basically classified as surgical and non-surgical. Non-surgical treatments offer some positive benefits but can render only short-term results. Surgical procedures often can give long-term results. Non-surgical procedures often produce excellent results but to maintain the appearance they need to be repeated regularly. There is nothing word called ‘permanent’ in the dictionary of cosmetic surgery. It solely depends on the individual. Lip fillers last about four to six months and if your body is thinner having a high metabolism rate then the injections won't last for a long time.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Proper diet and exercise, some natural therapy’s and skin care creams can often act as alternatives to cosmetic treatments. There are facial exercise plans, electronic facial exercises and much more. If you consult a cosmetic surgeon he/she can guide you in the best way to approach these alternatives.
