Diverticulitis diet recommends high fibre diet which is a measure to manage diverticulitis. The increased fibre content in the diet helps to reduce the effects of diverticulitis. An optimum diverticulitis diet should be 20 to 35 grams daily, including 6 to 8 grams of soluble fibre. In addition, the diet helps in preventing heart disease and protect against cancer. Here, fibre acts as a softening tool and helps the movement even more smooth through the colon.
Diverticulitis is a serious problem and can be tackled by an optimum diet.
Any food items like nuts, corns, etc. which are difficult to digest should be avoided.
The seeds in cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. are harmless but not recommended to be included in the diverticulitis diet.
To enrich the body with fibre and good bacteria, the following foods should be added to the diverticulitis diet:
- Include grains, bread (6-11 servings daily), whole-wheat, whole-grain products which is the source of high fibre content.
- Fruits like banana, orange, apple, berries, peach should be included and vegetables like carrot, spinach, potato, beans, and broccoli are recommended for the betterment of diverticulitis.
- Having milk products such as yoghurt, cheese by adding fresh fruit, whole grain or bran grains will help to increase the fibre content.

Do's And Dont's
Do's:
- Drink atleast 10 glasses of water in a day
- Eat a diet high in fiber and low in fat
- Increase daily intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
- A cup of hot water with lemon juice added before meals is a great kick start for the digestive tract, and the alkaline is good for liver support.
- Stress reducers: meditation, rest, relaxation, hot bath, deep breathing, yoga
Don'ts:
- Avoid processed foods and hands off junk foods.
- Drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and taking recreational drugs are quite a burden on the liver
- Sugar or sugar substitutes
- Limit meat intake, it tends to contain high amounts of antibiotics and hormones, and proteins are hard for the liver to break down.
- Caffeine over stimulates the liver, green tea is okay because the high levels of antioxidants far outweigh the small amount of caffeine it contains.
