Diet Chart For gallstone
Last Updated: Nov 20, 2024
About
The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ below the liver that collects and stores bile, a fluid concerned with the digestion of body fats. Although the gallbladder isn't necessary for a body's functioning, the appearance of gallstones can cause bloating, severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting in some people. In such extreme cases, the gallbladder needs to be surgically removed. Once the surgery has been done, doctors advise that patients should maintain a healthy diet in order to facilitate smooth functioning of the body. However, these dietary practices can also be followed prior surgery to reduce the pain from gallstones being developed.
The gallstone diet includes:
- Steer clear from oily, fried and/or fatty foods. These foods have a high-fat content and activate the gallbladder to release more bile required to digest the extra fat worsening the symptoms of gallstones and enhancing the pain.
- Consumption of low-fat dairy products such as skimmed milk, fat-free yoghurt and tofu instead of the conventional whole milk and full-fat yoghurts has been advised.
- Gradually increase the consumption of high-fibre foods such as beans, pulses such as legumes and whole-grain products such as bread, pasta and rice.
- Drink plenty of fluid such as water and green tea, the recommended intake of fluids is around two litres per day.
