A low-purine diet is an eating plan that limits foods with high purine. Purines are a natural substance found in some foods. When your body digests purine, it produces a waste product called uric acid. A buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints can cause certain health issues. Pain and inflammation occur when too much uric acid crystallises and deposits in the joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues, resulting in an attack of gout. The joint at the base of the big toe is affected in about half of cases. Gout is due to elevated levels of uric acid in the blood. This occurs due to a combination of diet and genetic factors. Symptoms of gout include severe pain, redness and swelling in joints, often the big toe. Attacks can come suddenly, often at night. Patients with chronic gout can use behavioural modification such as diet, exercise and decreased intake of alcohol to help minimise the frequency of attacks. Taking vitamin C and eating a diet high in low fat dairy products may be preventive. Additionally, patients with chronic gout are often put on medication to reduce uric acid levels.

Do's And Dont's
Do's:
- Include fibre rich foods such as whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and as the fibre absorbs water, drink minimum 1.5- 2 litres of it.
- Get engaged in physical activity, as activities like walking, running promotes bowel movement.
Don'ts:
- Avoid straining during bowel movements. It creates pressure that can lead to a tear or worsening the fissure.
- Never ignore the urge to pass the stools as it increases the chances of constipation.
- Decrease intake of caffeine, alcohol as they dehydrate the body.
