Normal Vaginal Delivery: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Nov 20, 2024

What is the treatment?

Normal vaginal delivery is a situation when an infant is born without the use of any drugs or surgical methods. It is considered to be the best way of child birth even after the introduction of new quicker and less painful ways of delivery. Natural birth can also take place without a doctor’s assistance. In such cases, a midwife plays an important role as she looks after you during and after the process. It does not require the use of too many injections and the time taken for recovery is much lesser. However, it is also a very painful and exhausting process.

How is the treatment done?

It is a totally natural process where no drugs are induced to fasten the process of delivery. Your body naturally starts changing as it nears the date of delivery, as presumed by the doctor. Near the due date, you may a feel some fluid gushing out of your vagina. This is known as the ‘breakage of water bag.’ You will start sensing some contractions after your water bag breaks. When you undergo contractions, your cervix will begin to widen or dilate. It may take some time to dilate to the needed measure i.e. 10cm. As soon as it is fully dilated, the baby’s head will appear. You might have to go through some more contractions and will have to push hard to make your baby come out of the vaginal canal. You will also go through some more contractions after the child birth to deliver the placenta.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Normal vaginal delivery is suitable for women who have a healthy pregnancy with no complications whatsoever.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

If you have been facing complications in your pregnancy like carrying more than one child, carrying a baby that shows signs of distress or any other; you may not be able to have natural delivery.

After the delivery, you may experience vaginal soreness, difficulty in urinating, soreness in breasts or vaginal discharge. It is completely normal and there is nothing to worry about.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

You must take very good care of your physical and mental health after the delivery of your child. Your meals must include a good amount of proteins, vegetables, fruits and dairy products. This will help you get back into action in no time and will also help in your child’s nourishment as you will be breast feeding for a few months. You must also start exercising after 10-15 days. Go for short walks. Do light exercises. Follow the instructions of your doctor.

How long does it take to recover?

The greatest advantage of normal vaginal delivery is the short period of recovery time. You will be able to do all your routine activities with the same energy as before in just a month’s time if proper care is taken.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

The cost of delivering your baby naturally may be between ₹35000- ₹ 60000.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Yes, the results of the treatment are permanent.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

You have the option to go for C-Section, involving incision and stitches, or induced vaginal delivery, involving drugs to induce labour pain.
