Parturition or the process of childbirth or labor is the end of pregnancy where the mother finally gives birth to her child after nine months. Women and their partners can opt for a normal vaginal delivery or a C-section, whichever they are most comfortable with. A normal delivery happens in three different stages. The latent, the active and the transition helps the body contract in order to let the child pass through the birth canal easily.

In a C-section, usually the woman is admitted to a medical facility when her water breaks or when it is about to. A cesarean section delivers the baby surgically and involves getting two incisions, one in the mother’s abdomen and the other in the uterus. This procedure is extremely common and many women choose this procedure over a normal delivery. A C-section is normally preferred when there is any kind of complication in the pregnancy or when it is extremely difficult for the mother to have a vaginal delivery. This method of delivering babies is faster and is relatively easier for the mother. Nowadays, normal deliveries are not common and C sections provide a much safer mode of delivery. However, it is proven that babies who undergo normal deliveries are less prone to infections than the babies who are born out of normal deliveries.

In order to start with the surgery it is made sure that the mother’s abdomen is completely clean and she is prepared for receiving the intravenous fluids in her arm. A catheter is also inserted to make sure that the patient’s bladder is empty during the surgery. After numbing the patient properly, an incision is made just above the pubic hairline

After the second incision is made in the uterus, the baby is removed from there. After getting the child out of the mother’s uterus, the doctor makes it a point to cut the umbilical cord first and then clear the baby’s mouth and nose in order to remove the fluids. The mother remains on the IV after the surgery and is expected to stay in the hospital for at least three days. In order to prevent blood clots and constipation, your doctor will encourage you to get up and move around. After your discharge, you will be given certain basic recommendations for home care, which you should follow in order to avoid any complication. In the surgery for the C section delivery, when the baby is seen after the incision , the umbilical cord is cut off from the baby and the mother and then the baby is placed under an intensive care unit and then handed over to the mother for breast feeding.

Only a woman who is pregnant can go for a cesarean section. In order to make sure that you are pregnant, look for symptoms like nausea with or without vomiting, constipation, mood swings, tender and swollen breasts fatigue and slight bleeding or cramping.

Women who are not pregnant cannot get the treatment done.

New mothers who have just had a C-section may be under the threat of having infection, heavy blood loss, bowel problems like constipation. Injuries to other organs can also happen during the surgery.

Infants may also have certain risks like different kinds of injury during the surgery, immature lungs or breathing problems for infants who are delivered before 39 weeks.

New mothers need to be extremely careful about taking care of themselves and the baby. Doctors recommend mothers to take as much rest as possible for the first few weeks. The mother should drink enough fluids to help retain the amount which is already lost during the surgery. You need to avoid having sex for the first four to six weeks after the delivery. In case you believe you are suffering from postpartum depression, make sure to seek help immediately.

Women take at least four to six weeks to resume their normal day to day activities with ease. The mother should stay in the hospital for at least three days after the delivery in order to make sure that there is no complication afterwards.

The price of the c section in India varies according to the medical facility which you choose. For a government hospital, you may be charged around Rs 5,000 whereas a private facility can be Rs 40,000 and above.
